The Synagogue
If you would want to visit the Synagogue, the only one in Targoviste, you will find it on Grigore Alexandrescu Street at number 37, an important street situated within the perimeter of the old citadel near the City Hall. Its construction began in 1880 on the domain, that according to the local tradition and to some documents, belonged to one of the daughters of the voivode Constantin Brancoveanu.
The Jewish community bought, in 1905, the land where the Synagogue was placed and that was in the property of the city. The initiative committee raised funds to rebuild the temple and the rebuilding ended in 1915.
Once the Jewish community decreased the Synagogue deteriorated. Fortunately, a few years ago the building was listed as a historical monument with architectural and decorative value, being renovated and used today as a concert hall thanks to a partnership with Valahia University of Targoviste.
