The four gates of Târgoviște

The four gates of Târgoviște

The former medieval royal seat of Târgovişte was one of the most important political center, and like any medieval city, it also defended itself through its gates arranged in the four cardinal points, gates through which, likewise, the rich chervans also had access.
The historical gates of Târgoviște were four, three of them were double, having a military purpose, to defend the fortress, and the fourth was simple, being more of a decorative element at one end of the Court of voivodes who were eager to escapes to the monastic jewel of Radu cel Mare and to the clear undulations, at that time, of Ialomita river, through groves.
The Buzău Gate, built on the main road of Brăila. Today, it is rebuilt and guards the northern end of the Bucharest Way, offering the people of Târgoviște, as well as the foreigner on a hike, a romantic perspective. At the time of construction, the main commercial and strategic road to Brǎila passed through here, the first important city to the Danube port being Buzǎu.
The Bucharest gate, was situated to the south between Col. Dumitru Băltărețu Street and Ion C. Brătianu Boulevard, streets that appeared in the topography of the city only a century ago.
The Câmpulung / Dolgopol (or Argeş) gate, to the northwest, its place being in the current intersection of Lt. Pârvan Popescu street with Calea Câmpulung. It was built according to the model of the Royal Hunters' Gate, but of larger proportions, and during the reign of Constantin Brâncoveanu it was rebuilt and raised.
The Gate of the Royal Hunters (Dealului), preserved, “in original”, on Ioan Alexandru Brătescu-Voineşti Street, built near the Voivodeship Court and which, in the past centuries, allowed, to the west, the refuge to the Dealu Monastery. The gate still delights today through the elegant arching of its inner vault 3 meters high and with an opening of 5 meters, and through the "ruins" of the watchtower.
These four gates were part of a complex fortification system built by the ruler Matei Basarab in the first half of the seventeenth century. They not only had the role of access and exit from the city, but also the role of watchtower.

Let's know our history and respect it!
