The „Izvorul Tămăduirii” Church (The Old Cattle Market)

A special historical monument of the Târgoviște landscape, of a special beauty, the “Izvorul Tămăduirii” Church is a unique place in Muntenia, due to its exterior painting, which reminds us of different times in the history of Târgoviște.

It was built outside the fortress, near the “gate of Argeş”, near The Old Cattle Market (Oborul Vechi), a weekly fair where merchants and craftsmen came from this part of Târgoviște, but also from the surrounding villages.

The construction of the church began on March 5th, 1832 with the substantial help of craftsmen of all kinds since then: "furriers, lampshades, shoemakers, plumbers, masons, tailors etc., who came from all over the country with goods to Oborul Vechi".

In addition to the Old Testament prophets, the great philosophers Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, and the Sibyls (the women who had, in antiquity, the gift of predicting the future), on the outer walls of the church are represented almost all Romanian saints: martyrs, confessors, pious and pious, hermits, hierarchs and enlightened scholars, kept in the living conscience of the faithful people.

Let's be proud that we are from Târgoviște!
