The Patron Saint of the Catholic Church in Târgovişte

The presence of Latin Christians in the Citadel of Târgoviște is recorded by historical documents since the beginning of the settlement's urban development.

The Catholic community in Târgoviste was made up of chiselers, furnace workers and diggers, of Romanian, German, Italian, Polish and Hungarian nationality, as well as merchants, craftsmen, soldiers, doctors and diplomats.

Over the centuries, there were two Roman Catholic churches in Târgoviste at the same time, one dedicated to St. Mary and the other to St. Francis of Assisi.

Today we can admire the only Catholic church in Târgoviște - the "Saint Francis of Assisi" Church - set back from the street, located in a generous courtyard, preserving the memory of a landscaped building, in the spirit of Saint Francis, the one so close to nature.

Francis was the son of a rich cloth merchant. He was taken prisoner during a battle, held prisoner for a year and became seriously ill. In prison he decided to change and dedicate his life to the Lord, the poor and the suffering.

Francis of Assisi, the founder of the Franciscan order, patron of Italy, of ecology and environmental protection is celebrated every year on October 4, which is also World Animal Day, and in Târgoviște the Catholic Church Shrine.
