The cannonball in the wall of the Princely Church – testimony from the past

Warmly evoked by Vasile Cârlova or Grigore Alexandrescu, Târgovişte was the residence of many outstanding rulers, such as Mircea cel Bătrân, Vlad the Impaler, Petru Cercel or Constantin Brâncoveanu who made their mark on the fortress through various achievements.

The imposing monuments, which form today a museum complex, occasion a history lesson of Wallachia. In addition to the Chindia Tower or the princely palaces, the Great Princely Church is distinguished by its great proportions, architectural perfection and decorative elements.

Founded by the ruler Petru Cercel, the Great Princely Church was and remains a historical and architectural monument, which hides fascinating stories, one of them being the one related to the cannonball in the wall of the church.

The Battle of Targoviste, in 1595, is one of the most important battles on these lands that was fought over the Ottoman garrison that had taken over the Targoviste Fortress. Later, after the Turks withdrew, the court was set on fire. Local tradition states that the cannonball located on the north wall of the princely church, is linked to these events.

Let’s know our history and respect it!
